Musing on science and technology in Ireland

about

I’m Stephen Flinter, a programme officer with Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), working in the ICT Directorate. Behold my cheesy corporate pic.

For those of you who don’t know, SFI is an Irish Government agency mandated with funding scientific research in Ireland. We are conceived along the lines of the National Science Foundation in the US.

The purpose of this blog is to provide an insight to what we in SFI do, and to inform our customers (i.e. scientists working in Irish research institutions) how we operate. I would also like to showcase some of the work that our funded scientists are doing, as they appear on the web and in other blogs. This is the human face of SFI, if you like.

I’ll also liberally sprinkle the blog with general stuff that interests me, amuses me or gets up my nose.

Prior to joining SFI, I worked in the software business in Dublin, usually working with small consulting and product development companies. From most recent back, these are Macalla Software, Connect Global Solutions, Challenge IT Solutions (a company I co-founded with two former colleagues), ebeon (now long gone), ICL (now Fujitsu Consulting) and Syllogic (bought out by Perot Systems). On top of that, I’ve had a number of private clients that I have consulted for, the most recent of which is the Irish Taxation Institute.

Before any of that messy work stuff, I did my decree in the Department of Computer Applications in DCU, and my PhD in the Artificial Intelligence Lab, Department of Computer Science, TCD.

The usual disclaimer: all of the entries in this blog are my own opinion, and are not necessary those of SFI.

There are many, many ways to contact me.
