The Directorates

February 27th, 2006 by steve

I think that some background is in order. Many of you may be aware of SFI, but for those of you who aren’t, it’s worth explaining the Directorates within SFI.

Unlike the science funding agencies of larger countries, who tend to have a very broad remit, SFI has a much narrower one: namely to fund science underpinning two areas: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Biotechnology. Each of these areas is covered by its own Directorate:

The majority of SFI funds is invested in one of these two Directorates. In addition to ICT and Bio (as we tend to call them internally), we have a third Directorate called Frontiers Engineering and Science. This Directorate tends to fund all science not covered by the other two directorates. That is, chemistry, physics, biology, engineering, astronomy, mathematics, etc.
